The IF Lab creates opportunities for our students to join exciting, creative, team-based projects to translate the abstract and theoretical into the real world.

As a global community, we face urgent challenges like climate change, environmental sustainability, human mobility, increasing digitisation, access to clean water and fresh food.

These constant challenges, combined with rapid global population growth, require innovative solutions that won’t be provided by traditional learning.

Global urbanisation will soon see two-thirds of us living in cities.

What if… our students access and analyse the data generated by the IF Lab, a smart building itself, to design future building management technologies? Evaluating how people respond to different spatial zones, light levels, temperatures and colours, students could then apply new ways of thinking to create innovative design and engineering.

Homelessness in our community.

What if… our students could find ways to provide comfort with wearable technology? A collaborative project could see our students determine the features users would like in a weather-resistant coat, designing and producing a garment that transforms into a heated sleeping bag, complete with a light powered by solar cells or kinetic energy?

Make agriculture smarter, more productive, and far more resilient.

What if… by using 3D printing and materials sciences our students make AI controlled LEDs to produce a vertical farm that provides each plant with optimised wavelengths of light to increase crop yields?

The IF Lab

The IF Lab’s doors are open for our students and the broader community to access: collaboration spaces, teaching and learning spaces, a digital fabrication laboratory with a bank of 3D printers, an augmented and virtual reality space, wet and dry laboratories, spaces for displaying and interacting with models, a greenhouse and even a platform for conducting gravity experiments.

Students will harness technology to enhance their coursework learning, as well as for opportunities outside of the school timetable. In the IF Lab, they will participate in projects exploring innovative solutions to real-world problems.
